Before operating the Sabre reservations system, an agent must sign in to it. This action identifies the agent to the main host computer and activates the terminal the agent wishes to use.

Shown above is the first part of the entry used to sign-in to the Sabre reservations system. The entry is depicted in a graphic display that is typical of the displays used throughout this course. The upper portion of the display describes each element of the entry's format, while the lower portion shows a breakdown of the entry. The spacing shown in these graphic displays is for clarity only. Unless otherwise noted, Sabre entries do not employ spacing.

In application, the sign-in entry above would be entered like this: SI*1197

The entry consists of the letters SI for "sign-in", followed by an asterisk and your ID code.

The ID code can be any two- to six-digit number. In this course you may choose your ID code. In a working travel agency, your ID code would be assigned to you by the office manager.

An additional level of security is provided by the use of a passcode, which allows you exclusive access to the system. Sabre has the following passcode requirements:

  • Passcodes must be 7 or 8 characters in length
  • Passcodes must contain at least 1 alphabetic and 1 numeric character
  • Passcodes cannot contain a Q or Z
  • No more than three repeating characters are allowed (e.g. AAA)
  • Banned words or proper nouns are not allowed (e.g. CHICAGO )
  • Passcodes must be changed every 90 days, and you cannot reuse the last four passcodes

Not all of these restrictions apply in this course. However, it is recommended that you follow the above requirements and use the same passcode for the duration of this programme.
