Shown above is an entry to sign in to the Amadeus Reservation System. The purpose of this entry is to identify yourself to the Amadeus computer located in Erding, Germany and to activate your terminal.

When you launch live Amadeus, or the VIASINC Amadeus emulator, you'll see a blue screen. The first thing you need to do is sign into the GDS using the command (entry) shown above.

The above graph is typical of how entries will be taught throughout this course. The entry is presented in this form so you can better examine its components. The upper portion of the graph identifies each part of the entry. The lower portion shows the actual entry. The first part of all Amadeus entries you will make is the "transaction code". The spacing shown in these graphic displays is for clarity only. Although Amadeus entries can usually be made with spaces between the different parts, for simplicity's sake you will be asked to make the entries in this course without spaces. In application, you should make the sign-in entry shown here as: JI*1234AA/GS.

Examine the graph above and notice that the entry consists of the transaction code "JI", which stands for "jump in", followed by an asterisk, an agent sign, an oblique, and a duty code.

The agent sign, or agent ID code, is a unique six-character alphanumeric code that is assigned to each travel agent, usually by the office manager. For this course, you may use any six-character code. The duty code tells Amadeus what types of transactions the user may perform. In this case the duty code is "GS", for "General Sales". This is the duty code used by most agents. You should use the "GS" duty code to sign in for the IATA lessons.

In application, the entry shown above would sign agent "1234AA" in to the Amadeus Reservation System, giving that agent general sales capabilities.

When you sign in to Amadeus, you are entering the system and identifying yourself with your agent ID code. Reservations you work on will be tagged with this code, allowing other agents to look at a reservation and determine that it was created or modified by you.

Now shown is the entry to sign out of Amadeus. The purpose of this entry is to inform Amadeus that you are finished using the reservation system.

The entry consists of the transaction code "JO", which stands for "jump out", followed by an asterisk.

You should sign out of the system whenever you are going to be away from your terminal for a long period of time, such as when you leave work for the day.

Note: In later modules, the emulator will ask you to sign in when you attempt to make an Amadeus entry, as if you were on the live system. Be sure to write down the sign-in entry as you will need to use it often.

NEW WORK AREA

JM

B

When you initially sign in to the Amadeus system, you are automatically placed in agent work area "A". The entry shown above will enable you to switch into any of the other five work areas. This allows you to put work on hold in one area, while switching to a different area to work on something else. Remember that you can only actively work in one area at a time.

The entry consists of the switch transaction code, "JM", followed by the letter of the agent work area you want to switch into.
